Photos from Wednesdays VSHS Challah Baking Party!

Most species can partake of their environment. However, humans are unique in the fact that they can collect from their environment and manipulate it into something even better. On shabbat, we reflect on this using the most obvious example-- flour. . .water.. .eggs,. . . yeast can make bread!
Thanks to all of the wonderful families that took part in this totally fun day!

Update for October 2010 from the Principal.

Here is the newest update from The Village Shul Hebrew School Principal, Mrs. Elana Soroka.

Hi all!

A few quick updates/ announcements:

1. Next, Oct 24th is challah baking day with the Jewish Family Institute for Morah Aliza's class-- grades 5 and 6.

The following week, Oct 31st will be challah baking day for Morah Sarah (SK/ grade 1) and Morah Chani (grade 2/3/4) 's classes.

The time has changed to 11 am-12 pm.

This is a program for children and their parents! Please confirm that you are able to attend (my apologies to those of you who will have to come twice). Siblings and grandparents also welcome.

2. Reading groups have started! All students will be bringing home their books for homework and review. Please ensure that your children "show off" every week what they have learned! The only way to truly learn a language is through the process of constant review. I promise you will see the results!

Please ensure that your child brings his/ her book back and forth each week to and from Hebrew school.

Thank you so much. May we continue to share in seeing the growth of your children together,

Elana Soroka

Mission Statement and Information

The Mission Statement of The Village Shul Hebrew School

The Village Shul Hebrew School - VSHS - has one overarching mandate and that is to enable students to use Jewish wisdom to navigate their lives. Whether learning about ritual or relationships our objective is to draw out the Jewish value or ethic that will become a life long tool for growth. Our dynamic Hebrew language and reading program will enable students to become fluent in Hebrew reading and to be comfortable in any synagogue/Jewish community any place in the world. Our new reading buddies program in partnership with the Jewish literacy foundation young leadership group will partner dynamic older students with our children, provide mentorship and motivate our children to see that Hebrew is cool!

Your children will ---

• Explore their Jewish Identity in a creative, hands on format including art, multi media and physical activity
• Benefit from outstanding, committed teachers
• Engage in immediate mitzvah application by visiting Pine Villa Retirement Home
• Learn with you, the parents in our parent-child programs and Jewish Family Institute (JFI) partnered programs
• Read and write Hebrew with our Hebrew reading buddies mentorship program

Curriculum

Each grade level examines the topics of the Hebrew Language, Prayer, Torah Studies, Jewish History, Holidays, and the Mitzvot. Additional topics are addressed by each class at a level suitable to the students of that class.
Sample Schedule

You may choose to have your child participate SUNDAY mornings or WEDNESDAY afternoons or BOTH!

From 4:45 - 6:00 pm on Wednesdays, and 9:30 - 11:00 am on Sundays, students will engage in Judaic Studies and learn about the holidays, Torah portion of the week (parsha), various mitzvot, Israel, prayer and more. During this time students will be grouped according to their age and grade level.
From 6:00 - 6:45 pm on Wednesdays, and 11:00 am - 12:00 pm on Sundays, students will be working on Hebrew reading, writing and language. Students will be grouped according to their needs and level of abilities.
Some students will have the same teacher for both subjects while others may have a different teacher for Judaic Studies and Hebrew reading. Students may also participate in our Hebrew Reading Buddies program.

Communication with Teachers

We believe that a positive parent-teacher relationship is essential to a student’s progress. We encourage parents to communicate with the teachers. If you would like your child’s teacher to call you, please call 416-785-1107 x300 or e mail hebrewschool@aish.com , and leave a message and your child’s teacher will return your call.
